Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
(1) In West Bengal, India, a flood-prone village, Gangasagar, has been chosen as the case study area for a field survey. (2) In order to establish relationships with local communities, I have conducted several formal and informal meetings with community leaders, village voluntary organizations, civic organizations, and local government officials. (3) I have acquired the necessary equipment and software for field survey. (4) I reviewed a wide range of literature on flood risk management and disaster risk reduction initiatives in India and South Asia, including journal papers, reports, and newspaper cuttings. (5) I have collected government reports, articles in local newspapers, and student thesis papers to get comprehensive picture of the flood risks in the case study area. (6) I have conducted field surveys in Gangasagar village to collect information on - socio-demographic features, flood frequency, height and duration, property damage and human losses , flood preventive initiatives . (7) I have summarized the findings of the survey, which will be presented at an international conference in September, 2023. According to my in-depth findings, floods are quite common in the village, and property loss is quite high, although no human lives were lost. As a result of livelihood dependency in the area, people are unwilling to leave this area despite high risk perception. An evacuation center and an early warning system are not in place. In the area, flood risk reduction is barely minimal.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Research is progressing well. Identifying the case-study area in flood-prone areas in India after the covid pandemic and establishing relationships with local stakeholders, including communities, was the most challenging task. I have identified a small village in West Bengal, India that is prone to flooding. I find the villagers to be very cooperative and willing to work with me. As a result, I did not have any difficulty getting the initial data. They welcome me to conduct a further survey and get more data from them. The preliminary data have already been collected successfully. Additionally, I have summarized the initial findings, which will be published in an international journal.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
04/ 2023 to 09/2023 : (i) Keep in touch with village leaders and voluntary organizations in the case study area. (ii) Analyze the initial field survey findings and write a paper on DRR and self-efficacy in South Asia. (iii) Identify data gaps and design future survey questions. 09/ 2023 to 12 / 2023 : (iv) Conduct the second round of field surveys and organize group meetings. (v) Develop cartoons, videos, and documents to raise flood awareness and preparedness among community members. 01/ 2024 to 03 / 2024 : (vi) Conduct small interactive workshops in local communities to test whether flood risk awareness increases self-efficacy of flood risk management. Using survey data to write a journal paper.
