Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The objective of this project is to investigate the incentives that prescribing physicians and dispensing pharmacies face when using generic drugs, as well as how current polices have impacted prescription and dispensing behaviors for generic drug promotion. With three types of incentives that physicians and pharmacies face—patient welfare, financial gains, and psychological costs;we aim to (1) assess if the incentives influence physicians' and pharmacies' willingness to prescribe and dispense generics, and if so, how they respond differently to the incentives. Furthermore, by focusing in-depth on generic-promotion policies, we expect to determine (2) whether the policies encouraged physicians to prescribe generics; (3) whether the policies motivated pharmacists to dispense generics.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Due to the pandemic situation, the research process was slightly delayed.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In 2023, we will examine the physician incentives in generic usage and how Policy Set I will alter physician behavior. Policies implemented and modified since 2010 for physicians will offer exogenous variances for identification. We expect to complete the estimations by the end of Q4 of 2023 and will discuss the findings at the Japanese Economics Association Annual Meeting later in 2024. Paper submissions will start in Q2 of 2024.

Causes of Carryover |
