Outline of Final Research Achievements

The effects of Boiogito (BOT), a traditional Japanese herbal medicine, were evaluated for knee osteoarthritis (KOA) associated with meniscal injury. Administration of BOT in a rat model of medial meniscus destabilization (DMM) maintained motor function, suppressed cartilage degeneration, improved abnormal bone metabolism in the subchondral bone, and inhibited the expression of cartilage-degrading enzymes. Additionally, initiating BOT treatment at an early stage after inducing the KOA model proved particularly effective, suggesting that BOT may be one of the therapeutic strategies as an early intervention for inhibiting the progression of KOA.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
