Outline of Final Research Achievements

We tried to introduce oxygen vacancy sites into various metal oxides such as titanium oxide by treating them with sodium naphthalenide as a strong reducing agent in a liquid phase. High density oxygen vacancies can be introduced into TiO2 and CeO2, and phosphate groups can be fixed on these oxide surface. The fixed phosphate groups are more than 10 times higher than the conventional method. The resultant materials exhibited high catalytic activity for the conversion of xylose into furfral with high selectivity. And the catalyst with a greater amount of phosphate groups introduced was able to synthesize furfural with higher selectivity.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
