Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, I examined the significance of Metallikon in art history by empirically examining the process of its introduction into modern Japanese art, using both artworks and materials, and the subsequent development of the technology. Although Metallikon was only used for a short period, mainly from the 1920s to the 1930s, it was favored by some enterprising artists, especially as a coating technique for three-dimensional objects (sculptures and crafts), and the term "metallikon art" was born. This research has made clear that his works were accepted by a wide range of people in the art world in a broad sense, including not only those associated with the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, such as Asakura Fumio, Watanabe Takeo, and Suzuki Kiyoshi, but also creators such as Hanai Tanrei and Goto Kuwagoro, who had a background in plastering techniques.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
