Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The goal of this study was to clarify the methods employed by Swedish sewing-class teachers to support individual students. The objectives, contents, and assessment of the national Sloyd curriculum were surveyed, and class observations and Sloyd-teacher interviews were conducted. Study results demonstrated that the teachers were highly flexible and offered individualized attention and instruction within the Sloyd classes. To help students, yet allow for creativity, the teachers also provided frameworks and broad parameters for creating the projects specified within the teacher-devised curriculum. Based on these results, the study suggested the possibility of using the Sloyd method in Home Economics classes in Japanese elementary schools.
