Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The purpose of this study is to effectively employ cellulose nanofiber (CNF) reinforced resin in between plies of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) laminates to increase its interlaminar fracture toughness. To do so, the mechanism of enhancement of interlaminar fracture toughness by using CNF reinforced resin is being experimentally clarified. Therefore, some parameters such as the fiber volume, fiber length of CNF in the resin, etc. are adjusted to find the most effective way to obtain optimum performance of the resin. Currently, a technology for localizing CNF reinforced resin composites in CFRP laminates was developed. Besides, the optimal conditions for amount of CNF reinforced resin applied in the CFRP interlayer were also determined.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Currently, a technology for localizing CNF reinforced resin composites in CFRP laminates was successfully developed in this study. As stated in the initial plan, the optimal conditions for amount of CNF reinforced resin applied in the CFRP interlayer were also determined. The resin was also inserted in between 90/0 degree plies of a cross-ply laminate to suppress the formation of delamination that initiated from the tips of matrix cracks under a bending load. To confirm the effectiveness of the CNF reinforced resin, three point bending test were conducted under a microscope. The results showed that the delamination could be suppressed even at a high bending load.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The mechanism of enhancement of interlaminar fracture toughness by using CNF reinforced resin with different parameters such as the fiber volume, fiber length of CNF in the resin, etc., is to be experimentally clarified. This is to determine an optimum performance of the resin to be used in CFRP laminate. After the improvement of the interlaminar fracture toughness by using the resin is confirmed, the effective way on how CNF reinforced resin can be locally placed and how the damages can be controlled in the CFRP laminate with internally complex structures, such as laminate with ply discontinuity, etc. will be clarified.

Causes of Carryover

The amount planned to be used for travel expenses were not used in this fiscal year as the conferences were being held in Tokyo. The ocurring amount will be used for travel expenses (international conferences) in the next fiscal year.
