Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this research, we have tried to obtain a new useful reagent from SF6, the strongest greenhouse gas in the world. Instead of affording the expected reagent, SF6 was found to be efficiently decomposed by using a reductant developed in our group. This method only requires that cheap and non-toxic reductant as a catalyst and relatively low temperature compared to known reactions to degrade SF6. The result would lead to practical technology for the decomposition of greenhouse gas.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

六フッ化硫黄は高い地球温暖化係数を有している一方で,高い絶縁性と安定性,また毒性の低さから,現在でも様々な利用がなされているガスであり,その効率的分解手法が求められてきた。本研究成果は,高難度分子変換と言える六フッ化硫黄の分解に新たな選択肢を与えるものであるとともに,用いた独自の還元剤であるフルオレノールと呼ばれる化合物の応用可能性を拡充するものである。
