Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The primary focus of this past year was to understand the mechanisms that enabled the efficient and controlled syntheses of semiconducting polymers. In one study, we quantitatively compared the copolymerization kinetics of polythiophenes using Kumada catalyst-transfer polymerization (KCTP). The findings highlight the significant impact of monomer structure on reactivity emphasizing the need for accurate kinetic data for better copolymer design. In another, we investigated the unexpected fast polymerization during the synthesis of a glycolated polythiophene (P3MEEMT) using KCTP. The study found that ethylene glycol side chains and their linkage significantly influence polymerization kinetics and structure. Contrary to typical KCTP, P3MEEMT exhibited uncontrolled polymerization behavior.
