Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The first task of the fellow was working on the software for the WAGASCI near detector for the T2K experiment. This involved taking ownership of the software project as the previous maintainers had left the T2K collaboration and ensuring that the latest changes were incorporated into the code in a consistent manner. He also conainterised all code packages associated with this project to ensure that the code worked across platforms and could be run at different computing clusters around the world.
The next related task was MC production which involved running all of the code required to simulate the full chain of events in the detector. The organisation and containerisation of the code achieved in the first step greatly aided this task and provided new simulation samples that can be used in future studies. He wrote documentation which was distributed to all collaborators on how this task can be achieved, ensuring that this institutional knowledge will be preserved within the experiment.
The fellow developed a new selection with which to perform a new joint cross section analysis using data from both the ND280 and WAGASCI near detectors. This will be the first joint analysis using these detectors and will have a sensitivity greater than that which either individual detector could achieve. This involved developing new software tools to perform data analysis on both detector data sets and will have future value as a path to further joint analyses.
The fellow also travelled to JPARC to participate in data taking activity.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The fellow has developed his research along multiple fronts and while he anticipated progress in the 6 months since he started achieving gains in all areas is a pleasant realisation. He would characterise his progress as faster than expected for this reason.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The fellow will continue his present activity including travelling to J-PARC to act as the run coordinator during the upcoming data taking period. Beyond developing new selected samples for his joint cross section analysis he expects much of the rest of the calendar year to be spent reworking various parts of the reconstruction code and implementing systematic errors for the new samples within the analysis framework.
