Project Period (FY) 2023-03-08 – 2025-03-31
KeywordsPopulation Genomics / Ecological Speciation / Habitat preference / Coral Reefs / Crustaceans
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This year we completed all of our field collections, generated all our genetic data, and begun our analyses and writing. Genetic work included: (1) the generation of 96 sequences of CO1, 16s, and H3 loci; (2) securing >300 unpublished, CO1 sequences from American collaborators for 30 target species sampled from across the Indo-Pacific; and (3) the generation of 590 million bps of GRAS-Di genomic sequence data for 188 specimens (11 species for population genomics, 66 species for phylogenomic comparative analyses). Combined, these efforts have significantly advanced our aim to investigate the correlation between habitat preference, population genetics, and patterns of diversification across multiple evolutionary radiations of common reef-associated taxa.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

We successfully generated significant genetic data sufficient for investigating our major research questions. Securing this data took a little longer than we hoped, but we have made excellent progress in our analyses and we expect to publish several significant manuscripts from this work.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In FY 2024 we will continue our analyses and writing in order to submit two manuscripts to internationally recognized, peer reviewed journals in the area of ecology and evolutionary biology. In May of 2024 we will present some of our findings at an international professional meeting of The Crustacean Society held at Academia Sinica, Taiwan.
