Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Work continued on an independent meta-analysis quantifying and synthesizing published data on the effects of host plant nutritional quality on insect immunity. These results were presented at two different conferences: EAFES 2023 (East Asian Federation of Ecological Societies) in South Korea and IPRI 2024 (International Plant Resistance to Insects) in Taiwan. At EAFES 2023, my poster was selected for the “Best Poster Presentation” award for my section (Molecular and Chemical Ecology). Additionally, I conducted a greenhouse experiment concerning the Crotalaria-Rhizobia-Utetheisa system in Taipei, Taiwan (hosted by the Lin lab at National Taiwan University). These results are currently being used to design a follow-up experiment which will take place in July 2024. Additionally, I mentored multiple interns and rotation students during the past fiscal year. One of my interns (Amy Morrell) also presented her work at IPRI 2024 in Tainan. This intern won the prize for “Best Student Poster” and was presented with a certificate for her achievement along with a monetary prize of $200 USD. Lastly, in addition to manuscript preparation, research, and mentoring, I also spent some time this past fiscal year on grant writing. I wrote a successful USDA-NIFA proposal valued at approximately $225,000 USD to continue my work on the Crotalaria system.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Progress has been smoothly progressing, and only interrupted by machine down-time (NMR & Mass Spectrometers).

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In the next months, I plan to spend time finishing my quantitative meta-analysis. The updated version of these results will be presented at the International Congress of Entomology in Kyoto, Japan in August 2024. I also plan to finish analyzing data collected from my February 2024 greenhouse experiment conducted in Taipei, Taiwan. These results will be used to design a follow-up experiment in July 2024. If needed, my collaborators (The Lin lab at NTU department of Entomology) will conduct additional follow-up experiments in Taipei at National Taiwan University after I leave. Thus, I will use my July 2024 trip to train graduate students and technicians on necessary methods.
