Outline of Annual Research Achievements

During FY2022, Dr Lusher has published 1 journal paper [1] and 2 international and 1 domestic conference papers [2,3,4]. A poster presentation was also made at SuperComputing22 conference, USA. Oral presentations were made at both domestic and international conferences. Dr. Lusher was awarded a Junior Researcher computational grant for 153.6 Million Core Hours on the Fugaku supercomputer at RIKEN. A research visit was made to NASA Langley Research Center, USA, in January 2023, for collaborative research and to present a seminar. The OpenSBLI code has been extended to be able to simulate high-fidelity simulations of transonic airfoil buffet. The code has been validated against data in the literature [2], and its performance has been tuned on both JAXA’S JSS3 supercomputer and Fugaku.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The objectives of the early stages of the project have been met and large-scale simulations are underway that will extend the current status in the literature. The OpenSBLI code has been developed to include multi-block capability, improved shock-capturing, filters, and improved post-processing. Preliminary results were presented at international aerospace conferences. Grant applications were awarded on the Fugaku supercomputer, and the code performance has been tuned. High-fidelity investigations are being performed on the NASA CRM infinite wing geometry at transonic conditions on up to 10 billion grid points, which exceeds what is present in the literature. The international collaboration with NASA on compressible wall-bounded turbulence has resulted in a journal publication [1].

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Wide-span airfoil simulations are ongoing, exploring the parametric space to investigate 3D effects of the turbulent transonic buffet instability and will lead to journal publications. The literature is limited to narrow airfoils which can only describe 2D effects. Abstracts have been accepted for presentation at the ISSW34 shockwave symposium in South Korea and ANSS conference in Tokyo. Dr. Lusher has been invited to teach a workshop on OpenSBLI in the UK. A new OpenSBLI software release will be made public during the JSPS project with accompanying journal publication.
