Outline of Final Research Achievements

Precedent studies of citizenship based on the history of modern Western Europe often lack a view to deeply understand the complexity of history of creating American citizenship during the first half of the 19th century. During that period, the United States experienced an unprecedented scale of territorial expansion, continual flow of immigrants, consumer revolution, and severe debates on the validity of Slavery in a country conceived in liberty and equality. In a society facing to those questions, a different mode of politics invite to-be-citizens participate into public sphere where they discuss hierarchy of political agenda in their civil society. While practicing informal politics through scribal publication, reading sentimental novels, listening to religious sermons, and sending petitions, sprouting class of American citizens of that period learned how to become good citizens and exclude others as not. This study explores that history.
