Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Towards gaining a comprehensive and concrete view of the tasks for those who were to assist the learning of academic writing/reading in Japanese, we conducted the following: the discourse structures of academic articles in different disciplines ( 270 articles in humanities, social science and engineering) were classified into representative types; the manners of exploiting quotation in the literature-analysis type of papers in humanities and social sciences were investigated; a quiz was developed to probe the process of acquiring academic vocabulary, and was applied both to native and non-native speakers of Japanese; demands of instructors and international students were studied through interviews. Also, several panel sessions were held to reveal that the core merit of learning academic Japanese was that it provides the learners with one of the very few opportunities to acquire a comprehensive and refined perspective and find the pleasure of pursuing an academic interest.
