Research Abstract

We developed modeling methods for some physical processes, which had usually ignored in previous modeling studies, associated with deep water formation in the polar oceans. By applying the developed methods, we estimated the influence of those physical processes on the oceanic thermohaline circulation.
The existence of tides significantly enhance dense water formation on the Antarctic continental shelves through their influences on sea ice distribution. Tides also enhance the export of dense water onto the continental slopes as they transport dense water in an asymmetric way.
Interaction between ice shelf and ocean reduces the thermohaline circulation starting around Antarctica. Under a warming climate, enhanced melt of ice shelf accelerates the weakening of the thermohaline circulation.
