Research Abstract |
During the 3 years of this study, we carried out 122 Community Music Therapy sessions for the in-home elderly in Kumamoto City, 10 sessions for the elderly who live in temporary houses in Aso City, and 6 concerts with the aim of encouraging the elderly people of the areas and the revitalization of those local communities. The results showed preferable change in 3 points: 1. activated body and mind of the elderly and so promoted their health. 2. restored self-esteem of the elderly. 3. regained community awareness. The performance of musicians who live in the local community at these concerts gave the local residents a chance to know their hidden local culture. Also the local musicians became more aware of the therapeutic power of their music and started a new way of musical activity aiming for the welfare of the community. The concerts were planned by young students, which helped to alter their image of the elderly and intergenerational exchange was promoted.
