Research Abstract |
This study aims to examine the relation between newspaper and culture by making chronology of articles in "Tokyo Nichi-nichi Shimbun" from its first issue. The result is that there was a gap in terms of evaluating paintings between the period of cultural enlightenment and the period after the Domestic Exposition(Naikoku Kangyo Hakurankai). It was the change in the evaluation of paintings from the realistic western canvas-oriented evaluation in the former period to the spiritual evaluation of traditional Japanese-style paintings in the latter period. Besides such phenomena of returning to classics as the establishment of classic course and the publication of Chinese classics oriented evaluation were also observed.
