Research Abstract |
This research collected the sources on military provisions (hyoro) in Medieval Japan, and explored from various perspectives, their existence forms, regional features and their transformations in each period. As a conclusion, this research clarified that military provisions, in almost all areas of Japan, had two aspects; one is "provisions as objects," which were consumed as food itself, and another is "provisions as money," which were used as methods of exchange and accumulation. Because of these two aspects, in more recent ages, military provisions became more significance during the wartime. In the warring states period, at last, military provisions became even the center of the war economy. The result of this research will be able to contribute progress of historical studies on wars and social economy in Medieval Japan.
