Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study selected four military base towns in the Okinawa Island and investigated their policies towards bases and the development of the reuse of the sites returned from the US military. The results of the study show the return of bases located to the south of the Kadena Air Base has been linked to the continuous hosting and newly acceptance of military facilities and that the way to reuse the returned sites has produced place-specific varieties. On the other hand, in part of the northern region of the Island, municipal policies have been developed on the assumption that municipalities continue to host bases. This study revealed a paradox of such structuralized militarization in which communities in the municipalities have been maintained by the existence of bases. It can be concluded from this that the way to de-militarization will be achieved by the socio-economic development of the northern region that will make the region independent of bases.
