Research Abstract

ROSCAs (Rotating Savings and Credit Associations) are called "Moai" in Okinawa. I examine the Moai in Naha, the prefectural capital of Okinawa, to clarify the features and functions of Moai created for strengthening the bonds of friendship, or "social Moai." The Okinawan people use the money of Moai to make their fluid relations solid. And the members of Moai help each other, that is the social Moai function as the association for mutual aid. In Taisyo-ward of Osaka, Okinawan immigrants brought their Moai and they use it to gather people into the community.
