Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research explored the relationship between humans and animals from (1) the historical viewpoint (e.g. the influence of religion and folklore), (2) the viewpoint of contemporary sociology (e.g. individualism and pet boom), and (3) the viewpoint of comparative culture (e.g. the comparison between Japan and the other, especially the Western cultures). The research led to the publications of a monograph on whales and whaling, two articles on the anti-whaling movement (in Japanese and English), and a translated book on animal ethics.
