Research Abstract |
Ecogenetic researches have been conducted in order to elucidate regulatory mechanisms of lamprey sexual maturation. Outlier tests for microsatellite loci indicated that a significant signature of directional selection could be detected in one microsatellite locus. Based on homology search, this locus was estimated to be located near the vasotocin precursor gene, which plays an important role in osmoregulation. Additionally, genetic variation was detected in the transcriptional regulatory region of this locus. Culture experiment of larval lamprey showed suitable growth patterns under sufficient and nutritious bait condition. Furthermore, for lamprey resource management, unconstrained gene flow across all populations should be maintained. Life history differences in lampreys have resulted from habitat difference in adult phase, which have probably led to recent natural selection on gene responsible for osmoregulatory functions.
