Research Abstract |
The main claims of this research are that lexical and constructional perspectives are essential for the study of semantic change and that the same expression can be regarded as an example of grammaticalization or lexicalization, depending on its perspective for analysis. With these dual perspectives in mind, I have attempted several synchronic and diachronic analyses of imperative expressions from Japanese and some other languages, including English. These surveys were publicized in forms of presentations at conferences and through journal articles. The findings of this research can make theoretical contributions to related research fields, such as cognitive linguistics, which emphasizes the importance of constructions, and the latest grammaticalization/lexicalization theory concerning constructionalization.
