Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This year, I have published two edited volumes with introduction or preface, as well as one single-author article with peer-review, and one collaborative article in the international peer-reviewed journal Mindfulness. Moreover, I have made several lectures or presentations, at the University of Virginia (USA), or in Paris, at the Ecole Normale Superieure, at the INALCO, or at Lyon University. All these lectures focused on the philosophy of mindfulness, digging especially on the materials on this topic found in the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism that is the main subject of this research project. While providing a clear typology of mindfulness according to Indian and Tibetan Buddhist sources, I have also attempted to clarify its meaning in philosophical and psychological terms.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The current project aims to clarify the nature, types and functions of mindfulness in Tibetan Buddhism according to the Nyingma school, and on this basis to offer a contribution to the contemporary debates regarding the philosophy and the psychology of mindfulness. During the progression of this project, I have come to realize that several texts written by Jigme Lingpa (1730-1798) were actually perfectly articulating this topic. Thus, I have decided to reorganize all the different elements of sutra, tantra, and Dzogchen, according to the works of Jigme Lingpa that I have now entirely translated and analyzed. These elements are now ready to be published in English. Moreover, I have already contributed to interdisciplinary debates on mindfulness.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Based on previous articles, I have now decided to expose the philosophy of mindfulness according to the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism in the form of a book that will be centered on the works of Jigme Lingpa (1730-1798) . The book will consist in three main parts. The first part will present the philosophy of mindfulness according to Jigme Lingpa's sources categorized as sutra, tantra, and Dzogchen. The second part will further examine Jigme Linpa's twofold typology of mindfulness, deliberate and non-dual. The last part will provide the translations of Jigme Lingpa's texts originally written in classical Tibetan. Moreover, I will continue to publish different research articles in order to clarify the Buddhist psychology and cross-cultural philosophy of mindfulness.
