Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
- Characterizing the key hurdles in implementing a practical underwater optical wireless communications (UOWC) system, including autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) communicating with an onshore base station through relay nodes.
- Evaluating the end-to-end performance of this UOWC system under pointing errors while considering the depth-dependent characteristics of the underwater link. (Results to be published in the upcoming edition of IEEE flagship conference: IEEE VTC2024-Spring)
- Investigating the UOWC system performance by applying the derived analytical model to characterize the delay induced-fading resulting from the motion of AUV. (Results disseminated in IEICE UWC2024)

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The progress in research exceeded the initial expectation due to rigorous evaluation methods and a collaborative research approach, leading to interesting findings on the capacity and reliability of the evaluated underwater optical wireless communications (UOWC) system.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
- Evaluating improvement in capacity and reliability within the underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) system while exploiting the spatial diversity gain of multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technique.
- Based on the evaluation results: Proposing an optimized design for this MIMO-UOWC system using the concept of the intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) technology for increased flexibility and communication efficiency.
- The research results will be compiled and submitted to major journals and conferences in the field of UOWC.
