Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In FY2023, I completed the laboratory experiments evaluating flow effects on mucus production for branching corals and conducted field observation for the production, transport and fate of coral mucus in Onna, Okinawa. The fieldwork included a month-long flow measurements and several days of water sampling to evaluate the dependence of concentration of mucus-like organic matter in the seawater on tidal motion and its spatial distribution. I am currently in the process of analyzing data collected in the field observation and developing the numerical regional circulation model for the fieldwork site that will help explain the field observation results. Preliminary results from this project have been presented in two conferences and one journal article has been submitted (under review).

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Fieldwork that was planned for in FY2024 was completed and I am in the stage of data analysis. I also started working on developing the numerical model which was originally planned to start in FY2024 because I anticipate the development may be more challenging than initially estimated.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In FY2024, I will continue to work on the analysis of field observation data, developing and validating the regional ocean circulation model including coastal processes such as wave-current interaction. After completing the model development and validation, I will work on synthesizing the results of numerical model and field observations.

Causes of Carryover |
The carry over will be used in the drifter release field work for the validation of the regional ocean circulation model.
