Outline of Final Research Achievements

The role of classical Chinese literature in the formation of Japan's traditional culture is significant. However, there has not been enough consideration given to the specific relationships and historical transitions involved. How has the study of classical Chinese literature developed in Japan from ancient times during the Heian period, through the medieval Kamakura and Muromachi periods, the early modern Edo period, and particularly in the early 20th century academic world? This question has been explored through specific selections and commentaries of Tang poetry, as well as paintings and ink works. Particularly noteworthy is the neglected area of research concerning the blind poet Tang Ruxun from the late Ming dynasty, which has been largely unexplored. The discovery of Tang Ruxun's work 'Tang Poetry Explained' will become a significant achievement in the future studies of literature and culture between Japan and China.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

中国唐時代の詩歌は、同時代の奈良・平安時代より、日本の各時代において、さまざまなメデイアを通じてもたらされてきた。しかしその中でも、江戸時代の『唐詩選』大流行の原因がこれまではいまひとつ明らかではなかったが、明末の上海で活動した一人の盲目の詩人唐汝詢の存在は、重要な発見の一つである。また、目が見えないという障害を持つ身でありながら、彼は周囲の暖かな支援を得て、また、彼自身の特性を活かして、唐詩の新解釈に挑んだ。古典文学の研究と、目が見えないなどの障害を持つ人々の研究とが共同することは、これまでほとんど無かったが、おそらくこの研究がその先駆けとなる重要な成果となるであろう。
