Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Significant progress was made during Academic Year 2024. A major highlight was the hosting of the 14th Waseda Penn Global Patent Law Conference, which brought together leading scholars, judges, and practitioners to discuss patent disclosure, preliminary injunctions, and the impact of AI and data-driven technologies. In addition, a series of specialized workshops were organized, including lectures on "The Challenges of Regulating Open Technologies in an Increasingly Closed Digital World" and "Digitalization and Private International Law", which explored the intersections between AI, cybersecurity, and data governance. The project team also contributed to international academic exchange by delivering invited talks at Tsinghua University and the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL), focusing on patent law and innovation governance in the AI context. Furthermore, a presentation was given at the 2025 ATRIP Mid-Year Webinar, a high-profile forum for discussing current challenges in intellectual property law. Finally, the PI wrote and submitted two book chapters for publication. Together, these activities substantially advanced the project's core aim of critically evaluating current data protection frameworks and their suitability for the AI era.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The project is progressing smoothly; last year, we accomplished a number of milestones, and heading into the last year, plan to summarize and disseminate findings as planned.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Building on the outcomes of the current project, I plan to apply for a larger research grant to further develop the analysis of dataset protection mechanisms in the context of emerging AI technologies. The proposed project will expand the scope to examine cross-jurisdictional regulatory models and their practical implications for innovation governance. In addition, I am scheduled to present the findings of this research at a high-profile international conference jointly hosted by the National University of Singapore, Columbia Law School, and the University of Oxford in Singapore in August 2025. This presentation will provide an opportunity to disseminate the project's results to a global academic and policy-making audience and to engage in further discussions that will help shape the next stages of the research.

Causes of Carryover

Certain activities were delayed / postponed due to collaboration partner's busy schedule. Planning to use the remaining funds for travel / meetings with international research partners and other incidental cost.
