Outline of Final Research Achievements

It has been generally accepted that Colletotrichum species form appressoria as an infection structure through perception of plant surface signals such as hydrophobicity and hardness. In this study, we revealed that octadecanal, a cutin monomer derived from plant leaf surface triggers C. orbiculare to develop infection structure through MOR signal transduction pathway composed of CoPAG1 and CoCBK1. In addition, we showed that PacC, an environmental signal response factor, is involved in regulation of secretion proteins gene expression that are essential for pathogens in HTE mode of infection as well as appressorium-mediated infection. Furthermore, we evaluated the involvement of RNA silencing in pathogenesis and showed that Dicer-like gene DCL2 is essential for pathogenesis and identified DCL-2 dependent small RNAs.
