| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
本研究は、アフリカの熱帯雨林に共存するゴリラとチンパンジーのコミュニティ構造を低地の熱帯雨林と標高の高い山地林で調べ、個体の分散、コミュニケーション、繁殖戦略、生活史を直接観察や糞からのDNA、ホルモンを抽出して分析し、これらヒトに近縁な2属の類人猿がいかに共存して進化してきたかを解明することを目的としている。今年はまとめの年度に当たり、これまでに収集してきた資料を分析するとともに、ガボン共和国のムカラバで長年追跡してきたゴリラの集団の編成に大きな変動が起こったため、大学院生（博士課程）を派遣して個体の動きを記録した。その結果、低地のゴリラは高地のゴリラに比べ、単雄群の比率が高く、集団間の出会いの頻度が高く、若いオスが集団を出入りし、遠距離間のコミュニケーションを頻繁に行い、個体の成長が2年以上遅れる傾向があることが判明した。低地のチンパンジーは高地のチンパンジーに比べ、集団サイズが大きく、分散傾向が高いことがわかった。また、同所的に生息するゴリラとチンパンジーの間には、個体の分散の仕方、個体の集団への出入り、コミュニケーション、繁殖戦略、生活史に大きな違いがみられた。さらに、アンドロゲン受容体の多型について類人猿の種間やヒトとで比較すると、種内の個体差は大きいものの，ヒト，チンパンジー，ボノボ，ゴリラ，ニホンザルの順に短くなっており、この順で攻撃性が高くなることが示唆された。種内や種間の出会いによるストレスレベルの変化も種によって異なることがわかっており、これらの違いによって食性の大きく重複するゴリラとチンパンジーが互いに出会いを避け、競合や敵対的交渉を抑えていることが考えられる。初期人類の進化史においてもゴリラやチンパンジーの祖先種と同所的に共存していた時代があったはずであり、本研究の知見は人類の進化における近縁種との共存の役割を考えるうえで重要な示唆を与えてくれる。
