Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We have investigated community structures of sympatric gorillas and chimpanzees at lowland and highland regions in Equatorial Africa, and found the altitudinal differences in group size and composition, inter-group relationships, immigration and emigration of individual, communication, growth speed for gorillas, and in group size, range size and individual dispersal for chimpanzees. We also found the marked differences in dispersal patterns, aggression, stress, reproduction and life history between gorillas and chimpanzees, which may mitigate increased competition between them with similar food preferences.
