Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Occurrence of ciguatera fish poisoning was analyzed by observation of poisoning symptoms and toxin analysis of causative fish meats. Distribution of ciguatera causative dinoflagellates was also observed through sampling of benthic species at various coastal areas in the Gulf of Thailand and South China Sea. Ciguatera has been told to occur various places in Southeast Asia, but most of them have no confirmation of presence of ciguatoxin, and different types of poisonings, judged by symptoms, were called as ciguatera. But we could confirm ciguatera occurrence, i.e. presence of ciguatoxin, for a case of poisoning occurred in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in July 2014. This is the first confirmed case in Southeast Asia. Toxic benthic dinoflagellates belonging to the genera such as Gambierdiscus and Ostreopsis, were found widely at most of sampling stations in the Gulf of Thailand and South China Sea. But cell number were quite low and their geographical expansion was not confirmed.
