Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Ancient Japanese manuscripts predating the fourteenth century are rare because their pages were cut and separated for display as hanging scrolls. The fragments of lost manuscripts are called kohitsugire. Therefore, kohitsugire has high historical value and collection of the fragments which were separated from a same book means restoration of a lost manuscript. However, there is one problem. Among the kohitsugire attributed to famous calligraphists, many copies and counterfeits written several century later are in circulation. Therefore, determination of age when the kohitsugire written by radiocarbon dating and collection of the fragments which were separated from a same book by comparison of their material, width of fiber and method of paper making with microscope lead to a restoration of the lost manuscript. In this study, we established the natural science-based method of the restoration of the lost manuscript.
