Outline of Final Research Achievements

The focus of the project was to reflect on international relationships in 20th century through the life history of Chinese Indonesians who migrated to other countries as the result of domestic and international affairs.Though the consequences of the history do not manifest themselves in the same way, the process of decolonization and Cold War era political processes had implications for Chinese diaspora in Southeast Asia, including the Chinese Indonesians. However, there was a gap between the studies of Chinese Overseas and efforts to understand individual experiences as reflections of historical events. Through the project, the members conducted extensive fieldwork in the destination of Chinese Indonesians such as Netherlands, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Japan. The outcome of the research projected not only the details of ones migration in relation with the international politics, but how the earlier migrants has developed new ties with Indonesia in the era of globalization.
