Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Perception of odors and tastes plays an important role in insect ecology. Understanding chemosensory systems provides us the opportunity to understand the insect behavior and develop novel methods to control pest insects. In this study, using high-throughput DNA sequencing system, we established the method for genome wide identification of odorant- and gustatory- receptors, as well as odorant-binding proteins, in various insect species. Furthermore, we generated knock-out strains for odorant receptor genes in a non-model insect species using artificial nuclease. Combining these two methods, now it is possible to identify chemosensory genes in any insect species for functional analysis using reverse genetics.
