Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study focuses on ethnic Koreans in China, namely the Korean-Chinese. Since the 1990s, the Korean-Chinese have actively migrated into large internal metropolitan areas, as well as into other countries throughout northeast Asia. It has become increasingly common where a family member’s place of residence and the location of employment, schools, and medical facilities are widely separated, thus crossing the territories of local governments and international borders. Because of advances in traffic infrastructure, it has become much easier for family members to frequently travel between these locations to maintain family ties. However, because social welfare systems are divided by government-defined territories, certain inconveniences and disadvantages have affected these devoted family members. Therefore, through interviews with them, this study clarifies how they address such restrictions and inconveniences produced by the social welfare services of local and national governments.
