Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study explores the potential of expanding folklore in Medieval Japan focusing on the historical aspects of its acceptance among people. In particular, visual arts like paintings and performing arts in the Edo era are examined. I argue that in order to fully explicate the potential of folklore in its propagating process it is necessary to observe peripheral phenomena such as book illustrations and local theatrical plays. It is also pointed out that stereotypical pictorial expressions depicted in those media often reveal the significance of ‘sight lines’ implied in the original works of literature.
