Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study reveals several distinctive features in the folktale type of Japanese poetry by Takahashi Mushimaro. The first feature is the way how Mushimaro establishes the narrator of the poet. He retells the events in the past while engaging in criticism of the original. This feature is unique to Mushimaro's poetry, which is not seen in the works of other poets. Another characteristic is the way how Mushimaro modifies the original. He doesn't just reproduce the content of the folktale as it was, but changes the contents intentionally. In this point, Mushimaro's retelling method is quite similar to the way Lafcadio Hearn retells old tales of Japan in his work. The current study also clarifies the similarity between those two authors.
