Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study is an investigation into what syntactic factors serve as determinants of quantifier scope in English and Japanese. I have investigated into the relation between the scope of quantified noun phrases (henceforth, QPs) and their syntactic structure and shown that it is the presence of a quantifier in the highest hierarchical layer in a QP that makes the wide scope reading possible for the QP. Secondly I have investigated the relation between the scope of QPs and syntactic factors in the sentence structure and shown that the scope of a QP is determined by whether the QP is licensed by a syntactic feature having to do with semantic interpretation. Thirdly I have argued that the difference between Japanese and English with respect to the scope of QPs is ascribed to the way in which the subject QP is licensed.
