Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
One Independent Variable (IV) for this research was the choice of a task topic. In the non-choice treatment, the student did a teacher-selected task. In the choice treatment, the student could choose which task they wanted to do from among three different task topics. The second IV is type of task: the static task and the narrative type of task. All tasks were one-way information gap tasks where one student had the complete information and another student had missing or jumbled information. The Dependent Variables (DV) for the survey data were Task Interest (TI) and Task Self-efficacy (TSE). For the DVs for data recorded by the students as they conducted the task, there will be Accuracy, Complexity, and Fluency. The basis of this research is to examine the differences in the TI and TSE for the survey data and the Accuracy, Complexity, and Fluency data of the production data. In October, 2013, I presented the findings up to then with a high school teacher at the TBLT Conference in Banff, Canada. For the survey data, there were no statistically significant differences for Choice for TI or TSE. For the production data, there were statistically significant differences for Fluency and Complexity for the descriptive task with choice and greater Complexity and Accuracy for the narrative task with choice. For the year of 2014, I was very busy with another project so I was not able to accomplish much for this grant. I was, however, able to clean up some data and files to make ready for future analysis.

Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
I wasn't able to progress very much due to being charge of another project.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
For the Heisei 26 year, I was not able to complete any work for the project because I became very busy with the Blended Learning Project for our university. However, for the Heisei 27, it is my intention to bring the project to a close. The biggest job for this year will be to write the report. This report is due in June and I intended to complete the report by then. In order to do this, I will have to retrieve data a year old. In addition, there is still some production data that will need to be transcribed. For this, I have been asking the company to transcribe the data in both English for that part and in Japanese for that part. This, I feel, will help to bring a complete picture to the project. It will be my intention to include the entire set of transcription data into the report as an appendix. Once I have the complete set of transcription data, I will then undergo an analysis of that data according to the application for the grant, which will include analyzing the data for Accuracy, Complexity, and Fluency. For the survey data, all of that data has already been analyzed but I will recheck the data again by eye as well as through the data analysis using SPSS. This data form the surveys as well as a substation all part of the transcription data was used for a presentation at the TBLT Conference in Banff, Canada in October 2013. In closing, 2014 was a tough year for me but I fully intend to complete the project before the due date in March, 2016.
