Research Abstract

The following achievements, in conference presentations and papers are noted below.
In September 2013, we did a Conference presentation entitled "Differences in Lexical and Syntactical Complexity in Japanese Students' Monologues and Dialogues." This Paper was presented at Language, Individual & Society 7th International Conference in Sunny, Beach, Bulgaria, September 7th through 10th, 2013. It was subsequently published in the Journal Publication: Journal of International Scientific Publications: Language, Individual & Society, Volume 7, Part 1. P. 292-302. In October, Robert Long presented at the JALT 2013 Conference, Kobe, October 26, entitlted "Complexity and Fluency Indicators of "Good" Speakers." The paper has been accepted for the proceedings is currently going final proofing. In December of 2013, a paper entitled, "Comparing EFL Learners and Native Speaker Fluency" was presented at the 5th International Conference on Language and Communication: Innovative Inquiries and Emerging Paradigms in Language, Media and Communication. Bangkok City, Thailand. The date was December 12-13, 2013. The article has been submitted for publication (March 10th) in the ICLC Journal and is currently under review. The fourth paper was presented on March 6th, 2014, in Valletta, Malta for the International Journal of Arts and Science conference. The paper was entitled "Understanding Fluency through Dysfluency: Comparing EFL Learners with Native Speakers."

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The degree of achievement from March, 2013 - March, 2014 has been steady and has been thorough. The achievement for this year is to be noted in four conference presentations, and one publication, with two more accepted and are under consideration for publication after final peer review. We have researched the following issues: (a) lexical and syntactical complexity across various levels of fluency (b) the complexity, fluency and dysfluency of higher level TOEIC speakers, (c) possible differences in fluency, communicative confidence, and syntactical complexity with two categories of EFL speakers compared with native speakers, (d) to examine the fluency of EFL speakers and non-native speakers to see if syntactic, acoustic, lexical dysfluencies decrease with increased proficiency. Grammatical accuracy, and tonal qualities were also examined.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

A fifth paper is now being finalized and has been accepted for the Euro-American Conference for Academic Disciplines, organized by the International Journal of Arts and Sciences. The presentation will take place between June 10th and June 13th in Prague, the Czech Republic, and the presentation is entitled, "How Increasing Proficiency Impacts Fluency: An Examination of Monologues and Dialogues of Japanese EFL Students." A final paper examining all of the transcripts from the four sections of the interview and taking into account three categories of EFL speakers and native speakers will follow.
