Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research focuses on the “Muslim Warlords” who established strong dominance over Northwest regions of China in the first half of 20th century and, using various new historical materials that have became available in recent years, examines: 1) how these warlords with characteristic ethno-religious backgrounds had emerged as strong military and political factions, 2) in what way and on what kind of power base (both substantial an ideological) they reigned over their territories, and 3) how were the relationship and interaction between their local lordship and the context of Chinese nationalism / nation-building. On the basis of the study above, some general and theoretical problems concerning to the “ethnic problems” in modern and contemporary China are also considered.
