Outline of Final Research Achievements

The village under consideration used to be two separate villages with residents of different socio-cultural strata 両班/常民. Present research tried to read the features of the village(s) over the past century in the documents of common-interest associations, called Kye 契, of the village(s).
Re-organization processes of eight associations have been traced. Detailed analysis of the documents have revealed the following: significance of geographical mobility of the residents on the organizations, relationships between the residents of the two former villages as well as belonging to different socio-cultural strata, and the process of integration into one village
The new findings call for reconsideration of several assumptions so far taken for granted in Korean studies: the concept of ‘natural village’ 自然村, geographical stability of rural population, and distinction between socio-cultural strata as manifested in daily village life.
