Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research project focused on the influence of the Common European Asylum Policy, especially of the border control policy of the EU on the protection of refugees and other persons who need international protection. Because of the mass influx of the Syrian refugees, Greece, which has the external border of the EU, could not fulfill its obligation of human rights protection and of non refoulement principle. However, the European Court of Human Rights and the EU Court of Justice played important roles in this aspect. On the other hand, several EU agencies newly became to conduct their activities for the border control in the Mediterranean Sea, but human rights protection and non-refoulement principle are not necessarily secured in their activities. Possibility of breach of non-refoulement principle by making border control stricter is now universal and it is essential that EU should tackle it with long term and wider vision.
