Outline of Final Research Achievements |
I studied Honda Toshiaki’s ideas about colonization. A word “colonization” was originally a translation equivalent from Dutch. Toshiaki’s idea was based on the understanding of the power of civilization. A more savage people are voluntarily willing to accept more advanced utensils and ideas and to assimilate themselves into more civilized society. In his main work he says that Westerner colonized savage land by civilizing indigenous people while Chinese invaded and got its territory and often caused a war. His idea is interesting and peculiar, compared with contemporary ones in Japan and western idea about colonization based on Christianity. I gave severalv workshops inviting Professor Christopher Berry(University of Glasgow). I wrote a joint work called "Virtues, Commerce and Civil Society".
