Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In Japan real wages are considered to have remained stagnate despite agricultural growth prior to World War II. Yet, this view requires to be examined because it underestimates regional changes. In this context I estimated regional real wage series in Japan from the 1880s to the 1920s by focusing on the two cases of the northeast area of Tokushima prefecture and the Shimabara peninsula of Nagasaki prefecture, defined as advanced and backward regions with high and low agricultural productivities in the 1880s respectively. The analysis reveals that in both regions real wages increased due to agricultural growth.
