Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This multi-country project undertook an institutional analysis, using a relational approach, to examine gender regimes in academia. The empirical research explored the various configurations of male-normative power nexus that are found in academia in the various regions. The differences of the Japanese university gender regimes were explored through a comparison of the other regions, explicating male-normative praxis that disadvantage women pursuing careers as professors. The research further explicated how women perceived their agency in the various regions despite societal and institutional marginalizing power structures that positioned women on the periphery. The research results are significant for university administrators and policy makers committed to being compliant to domestic and international laws (such as CEDAW) that guarantee non-sexual discrimination.
