Outline of Final Research Achievements

The present study examined the cognitive distortions of sexual offenders on probation or parole in Japan to help improve the treatment provided to them. Therefore, this study analyzed the data collected utilizing a questionnaire concerning sexual offenses, which was administered on the sexual offenders by their probation officers. The authors also conducted case studies of the sexual offenders.
The results of a comparison between the questionnaire responses of sexual offenders under probation or parole and control participants revealed that the sexual offenders scored significantly higher than did the control participants, especially concerning cognitive distortions such as rationalization and minimization of sexual offending. Furthermore, sexual offenders scored significantly higher on cognitive distortions concerning sexual offenses than did the general thieves who committed crimes without sexual motives.
