Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The present author has been aiming at investigating into the history of the methodological ideas of English language teaching during the Meiji Era, taking them as the predecessors to present-day researchers in Eigokyouikugaku, or Second Language Acquisition studies. During this three-year period under the Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, he tried to collect method books and journals in the field and published three articles that analysed the ideas and opinions by M. Sakiyama, K. Shigeno, and G. Takahashi. Besides analysing those people's published books, the present author also paid attention to their histories of learning English and such other material as journal articles. He has thus revealed that the methodological ideas of the Reform Method developed in Europe towards the end of the nineteenth century were adapted to the Japanese scene of English language teaching in later years of Meiji.
